Meet the Qalupalik
Far beneath the frozen waters of the Arctic lurks a creature whispered about in ancient stories told to children.
The Qalupalik.
In Inuit folklore, the Qalupalik is a mysterious sea being that waits beneath the ice along the shoreline. It listens for the footsteps of children wandering too close to the water’s edge.
When it hears them…
It rises.
Long wet hair hangs across its face, its body hunched and unnatural, its arms dangling like those of a corpse pulled from the sea. On its back sits a large amauti-like pouch, used to carry away the children it captures.
Some say the creature makes a strange humming sound beneath the ice before it appears.
Others say the water simply goes quiet.
Then the ice cracks.
And the Qalupalik reaches out from the darkness.
This miniature perfectly captures the unsettling posture of the creature — hunched, silent, and creeping forward as if emerging from the freezing sea.
It’s an ideal monster for horror-themed campaigns, folklore-inspired adventures, or mysterious coastal encounters.
Designed by Yasashii Kyojin Studio
This miniature was sculpted by Yasashii Kyojin Studio, known for their expressive and atmospheric creature designs.
The sculpt emphasizes eerie storytelling through subtle details:
• Long wet hair obscuring the creature’s face
• Hunched, unnatural posture
• Elongated arms hanging loosely forward
• Detailed back pouch inspired by traditional folklore
• Thin, almost skeletal limbs suggesting an aquatic predator
The design works beautifully for painters who enjoy atmospheric color schemes such as:
• Pale icy skin tones
• Mossy seaweed greens
• Cold blue-grey undead palettes
• Dark oceanic horror themes
• Frost-covered coastal creature effects
The miniature’s pose tells a story before the encounter even begins.

From the Crafty Llama Tables
The village elder warned them not to walk on the ice after sunset.
But the rogue had laughed it off.
“There’s nothing out there,” he said.
Now the party stood in silence as the frozen shoreline stretched endlessly before them.
Then the cleric heard it.
A low humming sound beneath the ice.
The ranger stepped back.
“Did you hear that?”
The ice cracked softly.
A pale hand pushed through the freezing water.
Then another.
Slowly, a hunched figure pulled itself onto the ice, long wet hair hanging over its face.
The wizard whispered:
“Run.”
